DigiBharata In an Interview with Paul Pacun, CEO of Vablet

Q1: What inspired you to start or lead Vablet?

Answer: My child was a film student and NYU and I wanted to put their videos on my iPad. This was back in 2010 and it was hard. Thus video tablet – vablet came about. Displaying PDFS is easy, but 3gig videos – offline was an issue back then, we figured if we could securely manage content – any quantity or size on mobile devices we would have a great product.

Q2: What problem does Vablet solve for its clients?

Answer: Vablet is used globally for presentation. Connectivity is not always assured and having content locally resolves many issues for salespeople. Salespeople need to be trained (LMS, present, and share content) – these are all features of vablet. We deal with companies in regulated fields and security and compliance need to be architected into the product.

Q3: What makes Vablet stand out in the market?

Answer: Vablet is very easy to use and is very reliable. Sales reps do not want to learn difficult systems. They waste 30% of their time looking for content, not anymore.

We have a trusted solution used by some of the largest life science companies in the world. We focus on Life Sciences and the very specific needs of their content. Our integrations with both Salesforce and SAP are developed where the specific needs of these organizations are considered. Security is constantly being evaluated and updated – once you lose trust it is not easily regained.

For sales reps in the field, knowing they have the right file at the right time is paramount. Support as many types of content is also critical and lastly branding. All of our clients brand vablet (without code!) so we spare them from maintaining a custom app in the App Store but still have all the branding it needs.

Q4: How do you define your leadership style?

Answer: I believe in hiring smart people who like to learn. My style is more as a coach and mentor helping each team run as fast as they can. We are also very customer-centric and I encourage our staff to understand our customer and their users.  I also believe work should be enjoyable and we have fun.

Q4: How do you keep your team motivated and productive?

Answer: Many of our employees have been with us for over 10 years. We keep the work as interesting as possible, updating source code is never fun, so we have a comfortable balance of maintenance and new features.

Q5: What has been the biggest milestone for Vablet so far?

Answer: Landing our 2nd F100 company, the first is one thing could be luck, but after the 2nd, we knew we were only to something.

Q6: How does Vablet embrace innovation in its offerings?

Answer: We are always looking for innovations that can help our clients. We are on the leading edge but not exactly the bleeding edge.

Q7: What’s the biggest challenge you face in your industry?

Answer: COVID changed our world. People stopped being trained in the office and more in the field. We added a learning module and helped our clients learn how to present remotely.

Q8: How do you prioritize customer feedback in product development?

Answer: We have always prioritized customer feedback in our roadmap. The customer is not always right so if they have an idea, we analyze it and if we find a better way to, we pitch it to them. Having them tell us what they need is very effective. We also review our roadmap with our customers so they can see other new features contributed by their peers.

Q9: What role does technology play in Vablet’s success?

Answer: We are a tech company, we live and breathe tech. We are always trying new technologies and constantly updating our platform. Mobile technology is involved and being mobile-focused, we are constantly testing with the latest builds of IOS, Android, and Windows.

Q10: What’s your vision for Vablet in the next 5 years?

Answer: Many innovations from AI are leading people to create new content and I believe we will have new content types in the years to come. Understanding the ‘player’ of this content which is typically very large plays a role. I believe AI will help with the branding and auto-configuration of the platform as well.

Q11: What’s a key lesson you’ve learned as a CEO?

Answer: If someone is toxic, you need to fire them quickly. Brilliant but arrogant is not a good combination.

Q12: How do you approach building strong partnerships?

Answer: We truly partner – we have partners who we can complement not compete with. For example, we are partners with Microsoft and Salesforce – they take a lot of work to get going but worth it. We partner with small vendors as well, which works great for both our firms – we foster these relationships as well.

Q13: How do you personally define business success?

Answer: Going to bed at night knowing you have done your best and your customers are happy.
